Samak vows to come to work tomorrow

Samak vows to come to work tomorrow
By The Nation
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej Sunday vows to keep on working at the besieged Government House and downplays political impact of street protests by the People’s Alliance for Democracy.

Speaking during the his Talk Samak Style live programme on NBT Channel, Samak said he would like to see what would happen to the country if he organised street protests against the new government like what the PAD is doing.

“I also have my supporters,” Samak said, suggesting that Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva wouldn’t be able to work as prime minister in such circumstances.

The prime minister said he would try his best to be patient toward the anti-government protests until the public’s patience runs out and signals him to take actions.

He said he would go to work at Government House as usual and would try his best to be patient.

“Once it’s time and the people give me a nod to act, I’ll do my duty,” Samak said.

“For now, I’ll be patient for the country. I have good intention to do good for the country.”

Samak added that it is unfair for the media to recognise the five PAD leaders and treat them with equal status with that of his Cabinet.

Samak said his government was legally and constitutionally elected but the five PAD leaders came from nowhere and had no such status.

“Where did you, five PAD leaders, come from? When were you elected and what legal status do you have?” Samak said.

“But the media reports it in a way they have the rights to do this and they cannot be touched. The media treats them as if they have equal status with the Cabinet.

“This annoys me because the media give equal weigh to them with what the media attaches to the Cabinet. This is social injustice.”

Samak said the PAD, which has besieged Government House with thousands of demonstrators, would not stop its campaigns against the government because of the hatred and grudge PAD leaders have towards former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He said there were no justified causes for the PAD to hold rallies because the planned charter amendments were not related to Thaksin.

He said Thaksin was also being tried in court but the PAD would not halt its rallies.

He said the government cancelled the plan to amend the charter and PM’s Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair had resigned, but the PAD continued to demonstrate.

He said the PAD changed its causes for rallying again and again but the real reasons were PAD leaders’ hatred and grudge towards Thaksin.

“I listened to what they said during the rallies and heard them attacking the former prime minister all the time,” Samak said.

On the no-confidence debate, which is scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, Samak said the Democrat picked on himself and seven other ministers of the People Power Party with apparent attempt to alienate the coalition leader from other coalition partners.

Samak said the Democrat apparently hoped to see the coalition partners to withdraw support for the PPP and support the Democrat as the next coalition leader instead.

But he said other coalition partners understand the Democrat’s plan and would not fall for it.

No gambling for Chinese going to Taiwan

Sun Jun 22, 1:21 AM ET

BEIJING - Chinese visitors to Taiwan will not be allowed to gamble or engage in “pornographic activities,” China’s state news agency reported Sunday.

The warning was issued by the Cross-Strait Tourism Association, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It follows the signing of breakthrough agreements on charter flights and tourism promotion between the rival sides earlier this month.

“Travel agencies are not allowed to arrange gambling, pornographic and drug-related activities, and other activities harming cross-strait relations,” Xinhua said.

It did not explain what is meant by “pornographic activities.”

Citizens from China can only go to Taiwan with tour groups.

Chinese travel agency managers have arrived in Taiwan on a fact-finding mission to inspect tourism infrastructure, such as hotels and transportation. They were to visit Sun Moon Lake on Sunday, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

They were visiting the self-governing island for 10 days, the maximum allowed under the agreement that permits 3,000 Chinese tourists a day to visit Taiwan.

The tourism agreement takes effect from July 4. Under a separate agreement signed in Beijing, 36 charter flights will be allowed to cross the 100-mile wide Taiwan Strait each weekend.

At the moment, travelers from Taiwan to China must transit a third destination, such as Hong Kong.

Taiwanese hoteliers, airlines and tour operators hope big-spending Chinese tourists will prove a shot in the arm to the island’s travel sector, although limited capacity and continuing political differences between the longtime rivals dictate limits on numbers and itineraries.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing continues to claim the island as part of its territory, and threatens war if Taiwan moves to make the break permanent.
